And Our Flag Was Still There

"I constructed the scene depicted here entirely in black and white and gray, except for the American flag flying over the ruins of the World Trade Center. Its stripes shine in red satin and white lame; its stars are glittery sequins. It symbolizes the triumph of the American spirit, shining brightly despite the destruction below. In the rubble around the WTC is fabric I printed from the photographs of loved ones missing in the aftermath of the collapse."
